Wraxall Vineyard on an autumn evening

The Vineyard

An English Vineyard with Somerset Charm
"Wine and friends, are a great blend."
Ernest Hemingway
Working in harmony with our surroundings, nurturing the vines and understanding the terroir is at the heart of the Vineyard; and the Vineyard is where great wine begins!

Situated on a beautiful south-facing hill just south of the Mendips in Somerset, Wraxall Vineyard is surrounded by verdant countryside and breath-taking views. Blessed with a mild South West climate and rich fertile soils, our location is perfect for growing vines.

Yet growing vines and producing wine is a slow process and a real labour of love. Owners David and Lexa took over Wraxall Vineyard as a family venture in 2021. Quality and sustainability is at the heart of everything that we do and today we are producing truly great wines for all to share, celebrate and enjoy.

Our Grapes - Our Future

Some of the vines at Wraxall are now more than 30 years old. Over the years, the Vineyard has developed a mature range of Pinot Noir, Pinot Précoce, Bacchus and Seyval Blanc. With additional plantings of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay during 2022 and The Old Orchard will be planted with more vines in 2025, our aim is to ensure that Wraxall continues to produce high quality wines for many years to come.

Wraxall is one of the oldest vineyards in Somerset with a unique tasting space and Wine Bar, The View@Wraxall, open to visitors all year round, and three holiday cottages with views across the Vineyard sleep up to 14 people.  We are continuing to invest in the future.

Discover the History of Wraxall

Producing First Class English Wines
Whilst there is local hearsay of the Romans growing vines at Wraxall, we have yet to find any evidence! The vineyard was originally planted in 1974 with Seyval Blanc, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus and Madeleine Angevine.

In 1980’s Astra Blair and her husband, Raimund Herincx, both well-known opera singers, took over the running of the vineyard. They added to the original vines and planted a few Chardonnay, smuggled back from France by Raimund, hidden in some socks!

Astra, a Soprano and Agent for Opera Singers, took her sales skills into the world of wine and Wraxall Wine was served in First Class on British Rail GWR and at the Waldorf Hotel in London where it was a “special” served with Cream Teas.

When the Vineyard became too much for Raimund and Astra they sold it and it fell into disrepair, before new owners in 2007 nurtured the Vineyard back to life.
